ExplorOcean is one of the top nonprofit organizations for those grades K to 12. This organization is dedicated to helping students learn about the seven principles of Ocean Literacy. The facility is located at 600 East Bay Avenue in New Port Beach and covers about 33,500 square feet. There's an additional commercial marina and several boardwalk rides available, as well.

The Facility

The ExplorOcean facility includes many different labs and centers, such as:

  • ExplorOcean Maker Lab - This lab is dedicated to kids and allows them to explore and run wild with their imagination.
  • Innovation Lab - This lab provides visitors the tools, space and time to create. It's a unique space for the older explores and includes three programs, which are Underwater Robotics, Makers Lab and Mathobotix.
  • Ocean Literacy Center - Serving students from K to 12th grade, this center provides hands on experiments, activities and more.
  • ExplorOcean New Port Beach California Preview Center - This room covers about 800 square feet and offers the plans for redevelopment of the entire facility. The plans are set to be finished by 2018 and will change the building and facilities quite a bit.
  • Stelle Model Pavilion - This part of the facility features a collection of historical ships from Europe and the Far East.

Along with these facilities, ExplorOcean provides plenty of educational programs. They all center on the seven ocean literacy principles, which are:

  1. The Earth has one big ocean
  2. The ocean shapes the Earth
  3. The ocean influences weather and climate
  4. The ocean makes Earth habitable
  5. The ocean supports a diversity of life and ecosystem
  6. Humans and the ocean are interconnected
  7. The ocean is largely unexplored

Visitors can explore the center Wednesday and Thursday from 12pm to 4pm, Friday from 12pm to 5pm, Saturday from 11am to 5pm and Sunday from 12pm to 5pm. The center is closes during the winter on Mondays and Tuesdays. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and $3 for children.
